Introducing virtual reality into exposure therapy sessions allows a patient with a fear of flying, for example, to “participate” virtually in a scene while wearing a VR headset in the “inside” of an airplane during a treatment session.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with VR

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, refers to a type of therapy in which the therapist helps patients identify and change maladaptive thoughts to healthier thinking and adjust more easily to challenging situations. Research demonstrates that CBT, when combined with virtual reality therapy, is more effective than CBT used alone.
